Lakeside won five titles in a seven-year span from 1969 to 1975, the only non-title years coming in 19. Lakeside and the now defunct Gordon High lead the county with five state titles apiece. He was named First Team All-District, First Team All-Region and All-State as a senior. ?Surkamp played four years of soccer at Osbourn Park High School in Manassas, where he led the team in assists and ranked second in scoring as a junior and senior. He was named to College Sports Madness's All-ACC First Team and the College Sports Madness All-American team during his time at NC State. Although Surkamp missed almost half of his senior season in 2014 due to injury, he still tied the team high with four goals and dished out three assists. He then transferred to North Carolina State, where he led the Wolfpack and finished tied for third in the ACC in goals scored (eight) during his junior season in 2013. Surkamp led the Lancers in goals (11) and finished in the top 20 of the NCAA for goals scored. He helped lead Longwood to a 11-6-3 mark and an ASC tournament championship. In 2011, he was named the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) Player of the Year, while also being named being selected as an NSCAA All-North Atlantic Region team member and a VaSID All-State team member. Surkamp began his collegiate career playing at Longwood in 2010 where he was a starter in his rookie campaign while leading the team in assists. Surkamp delved into collegiate coaching at Richard Bland under head coach Eduardo de Souza, who joined the Patriots as a full-time assistant coach in February.
